What Are Merle Chihuahuas?

A merle chihuahua is said to be a ‘style’ or ‘designer color’ to gain popularity within chihuahua breeding and is only produced through cross-breeding. A merle chihuahua comes in a variety of coat patterns including blue and red colors. Blue merle chihuahuas are the most common and typically have patches of black fur. Red merle chihuahuas have patches of brown or copper fur. Genetically, they are different, but both have the merle gene.

How Does Merle Breeding In Chihuahuas Work?

The merle chihuahua color does not occur naturally in a chihuahua’s DNA, but because the gene is dominant, one of the parents MUST be a merle chihuahua for the gene to be apparent. To be clear, this is not a recessive (inherited) gene that suddenly appears. The only it way it can show up into the gene pool is by cross breeding a Chihuahua with another larger dog breed with the merle gene and then altering the record of it’s decent (pedigree dog registration), therefore misleading people to believe it to be a purebred.

Further, the odds of getting a larger chihuahua is often the result of the cross breeding because the merle gene comes from the larger dogs that were introduced years ago.

Health Problems In Merle Chihuahuas

A large number of potential health problems come with breeding merle chihuahuas. Probably the most common issue that can arise is when the merle gene produces color because it acts on other genes that can lighten and whiten the chihuahua’s coat. When this occurs, the actual whitening of the coat is can cause defects because it can cause the pigment inside the ear and the eye to also whiten, making the chihuahua blind or deaf as the nerve endings become emaciated.

Merle chihuahua breeders don’t always tell their prospective buyers about the potential health problems that can occur when breeding a merle to a non-merle chihuahua, thus making it a very deceptive breeding practice.

Nonetheless, If you are still determined to have a merle chihuahua, accept the fact that you may not get a healthy dog, despite how adorable and and healthy it may seem at first as problems may not become evident for months.

The practice of doubling up on color by breeding two merles together to “beef up” the merle color produces chihuahuas with life-long health defects such as blindness, deafness, and ghastly abnormalities. Gloria Lambert thoroughly describes the tragedies related to this horrific breeding practice in her highly acclaimed article called, Chihuahuas – Any Color Marked Or Splashed?

The World Bans Merle Chihuahuas

Germany, Canada, England and Australia no longer allow the breeding and showing of merle chihuahuas due potential health problems related to the merle gene. It’s unfortunate the USA did not follow suit and continues to breed and export merle chihuahuas putting the already tainted purebred American Chihuahua’s gene pool in endangerment.

We are certain that there are many wonderful little merle chihuahuas out there making many chihuahua owners very happy, but we encourage potential chihuahua owners to seriously consider what’s at stake if they are leaning towards purchasing a merle chihuahua from a merle chihuahua breeder over other non-controversial chihuahua breeders.

When periodontal gum disease in chihuahuas starts, it’s usually goes unnoticed because there are no outward signs and symptoms. However, once it begins to accelerate in growth, it can damage your chihuahua’s mouth resulting in eroded gums, teeth falling out, bone loss, internal pain, suffering and tragically, even death.

The good news is that periodontal gum disease can be prevented.

Why do chihuahuas get periodontal gum disease?

After your chihuahua eats, bacteria mixed with saliva and food begins to create an unpleasant film over the teeth called plaque that’s recognized as foreign matter to the immune system. This foreign matter triggers the immune system to react and it begins to assemble white blood cells to attack the foreign matter.

Enzymes then released by the white blood cells fight to break down gum tissue resulting in inflamed gums, damaged tissue and bone loss. In chihuahuas, it eventually leads to tooth loss if proper dental care is neglected.

Because chihuahuas have a more alkaline environment in their mouths that propels plaque formation than humans do, they are five times more likely to get periodontal gum disease.

chihuahua back molars gum disease

Brushing the hidden back molars of your chihuahua’s teeth should not be overlooked.

Plaque-forming bacteria also multiplies if your chihuahua’s teeth are not brushed every day, which also includes lifting their lips and thoroughly cleaning their hidden and hard to get at back molars.

The dangers of periodontal gum disease in chihuahuas

If plaque and mineral deposits (dental calculus) on your chihuahua’s teeth is not cleaned with regular brushing and routine veterinary dental care, it will result in halitosis (bad breath), gingivitis (painful inflammation of the gums), tooth loss and full on periodontal disease.

Because the bacteria from gum disease in your chihuahua’s mouth enters their blood stream and circulates in the arteries surrounding their hearts, they are then prone to heart disease and organ damage that can not be reversed if left untreated.

Recognizing periodontal gum disease in chihuahuas

The first thing you can do is your own oral examination and ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does your chihuahua’s breath stink? This is probably the most common early sign.
  2. Does your chihuahua have red or swollen gums?
  3. Is your chihuahua’s teeth yellow or brown?
  4. Are any of your chihuahua’s teeth loose or missing?
  5. Has your chihuahua’s appetite changed? Are they losing weight or having trouble chewing bones?

severe periodontitis in chihuahua

Severe periodontitis in 8 year old male chihuahua with neglected dental care.

Symptoms of severe gum disease include:

  • Halitosis – alarmingly bad breath
  • Red, inflamed and bleeding gums – gingivitis
  • Troubles picking up their food
  • Teeth that are loose and move when touched
  • Blood appears in their water bowl or on their chew toys
  • Their saliva is bloody or stringy
  • They shy away when you try to touch their heads
  • They make noises when they eat or yawn
  • They chew on only one side of their mouth
  • There appears to be bumps or lumps in their mouth
  • Nasal discharge or progressive sneezing (bone between the nasal and oral cavity deteriorates)

Preventing periodontal gum disease in your chihuahua

If caught early, periodontal gum disease can be prevented, treated and even reversed. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Brush your chihuahua’s teeth everyday
  • Take your chihuahua in to your vet for routine oral exams and cleanings
  • Give your chihuahua chew toys and tooth-friendly chew treats
  • Give your chihuahua quality dog food (ask your vet about dental-oriented dog food options)

Treating periodontal gum disease in your chihuahua

Chances are your chihuahua may already have some gum disease. According to The American Veterinary Medical Association, an estimated 80 percent of dogs will have some form of periodontal disease by the age of 2 or 3 years old.

the four stages of periodontal disease

The four stages of canine periodontal gum disease

Treatment is dependent on the stage of disease with all treatment requiring an exam and x-rays.

Stage 1. Mild gingivitis (redness or inflammation of the gums), without periodontal pockets (deep space around the teeth) between the gum and tooth. Treatment can reverse condition. A cleaning above and below the gum line is the only treatment required.

Note: If your chihuahua’s teeth look like the picture below, its time to get their teeth cleaned!

periodontal gum disease in chihuahua stage one

Stage one of periodontal disease in chihuahuas – mild gingivitis.

Stage 2. There are periodontal pockets between the gum and tooth, but no significant bone involvement. Gums are inflamed and swollen and halitosis (bad breath) is noticeable. Treatment can reverse the condition. The gum tissue and tooth root are cleaned, rinsed, and treated with a gel to help reattach the gum to the tooth root.

Stage 3. Periodontal pockets around the teeth go deeper than 5 millimeters, meaning there’s bone loss. Bad breath, bleeding of the gums, infection and tartar. Treatment can reverse the condition. Exposing the defect by opening a gum flap and cleaning out the diseased tissue around the tooth root and bone and the use of special therapies to grow new tissue and bone.

Stage 4. The bone loss is over 50%, chronic bacterial infection may have spread throughout organs of the body via the bloodstream. Non reversible. Tooth extraction is the only treatment.

If you notice your chihuahua has bad breath, red inflamed gums, loose or missing teeth or appetite changes, bring them in immediately to see your vet for an oral examination.

Just as you keep on top of your own health, you need to stay on top of your chihuahua’s health. If you do this, you can prevent several health problems in your chihuahua and very expensive vet bills.

Keeping your chihuahua safe this Halloween should be a priority given they are a dog breed that can get quite excited with repetitious doorbell ringing, quick to snatch up and run away with fallen food and can fit easily into any costume because of their size.

Famous Chihuahua would like to ensure chihuahua owners keep their chihuahuas safe, happy, protected and healthy by asking them to follow these simple Halloween safety tips:

Select costumes carefully

If you dress up your chihuahua, choose a Halloween costume for your chihuahua that doesn’t limit their movement, hearing, sight or ability to breath or bark. Check for any choking hazards also.

Skip the sweets

Avoid feeding your chihuahua Halloween candy. Many treats can be toxic to your chihuahua’s health and those that contain the artificial sweetener Xylitol can be poisonous. Even small amounts can cause a drop in blood sugar and result in seizures. Also avoid feeding them chocolate. Dark chocolate and bakers chocolate can be especially dangerous.

Throw away candy wrappers

Ingesting aluminum or cellophane can cause intestinal blockage and induce vomiting. Throw those candy wrappers in the garbage to avoid them becoming a play toy for your pet.

Keep your chihuahua in another room during the trick-or-treating rush

Halloween can bring many unexpected visitors to the door all at once. This can make your chihuahua nervous and likely to flee when the door opens. If they accidentally get loose, make sure your Chihuahua is wearing an ID tag.

Avoid potentially harmful decorations

Candles in jack-o-lanterns are easily knocked over. Avoid using them as this can result in a fire and burns to your chihuahua. Also, take preventative care with open wires, cords and potentially harmful products your chihuahua may try to ingest. Do your best to keep them out of harms way.

Patellar Luxation: a knee problem in chihuahuas is a common health condition in the chihuahua breed. The knee is a complex structure consisting of muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones. These components must align properly and interact harmoniously in order to function properly. Three bones are included in the knee: the femur, the tibia, and the patella (kneecap).

The lower front portion of the femur (thigh bone) in a normal chihuahua has two bony ridges that form a fairly deep groove in which the patella is supposed to slide up and down. These structures limit the patella’s movement to one restricted place, and in doing so, control the activity of the quadriceps muscle. The entire system is constantly lubricated by joint fluid. It works so that there is total freedom of motion between the structures.

diagram of the anatomy of a normal knee cap

Diagram of the anatomy of a normal knee cap

Patellar luxation (or trick knee, subluxation of patella, or floating patella), occurs when the patella, or kneecap, dislocates or moves out of its normal location.

When the patella is luxated in a chihuahua, the ridges forming the patellar groove are not prominent, and a too-shallow groove is created. In a chihuahua with shallow grooves, the patella will luxate (jump out of the groove) sideways, especially toward the inside. This can causes the leg to ‘lock up’ with the foot held off the ground.

chihuahua with a luxating patella on both hind legs

Chihuahua with a luxating patella on both hind legs
(like teaka the famous chihuahua has as seen in the video above)

When the patella luxates from the groove of the femur, it usually cannot return to its normal position until the quadriceps muscle relaxes and increases in length. This is why a chihuahua may be forced to hold their leg up for a few minutes after this occurs because the muscles are contracted, the patella is luxated from its correct position and the joint is held in a flexed or bent position. Pain is caused by the knee cap sliding across the bony ridges of the femur.

Patellar luxation in chihuahuas can have both genetic causes, or environmental causes (luxation due to injury). If it appears at an early age, it’s likely to be due to genetic causes. Environmental sources of injury can include too much jumping (i.e. jumping off furniture), or too much stress on the patella and surrounding ligaments (ie. when a chihuahua dances on its rear legs). This is especially dangerous when a chihuahua is a puppy in stages of early development.

Adult chihuahuas can also damage their kneecap by a forceful hit or blow. With age, looseness might also be recognized, especially in chihuahuas that are overweight as there is constant pressure on surrounding ligaments.

Symptoms of patellar luxation include:

  • skipping,
  • yelping when in pain
  • holding the rear leg up for a short time as they walk
  • or run or rear-leg weakness

If left uncorrected, the condition will result in serious wear of the patellar ridges where the groove becomes very shallow resulting in both arthritis and in the more serious cases, permanent crippling.

If your chihuahua does have patellar luxation, see your veterinarian for options to help alleviate symptoms. The use of supplements such as glucosamine may be helpful and it’s recommended that you keep your chihuahua lean and exercised to keep the leg muscles strong. CBD for chihuahuas is also a great remedy to help with pain and anxiety.

Depending on how severe the condition is, it may or may not require surgery. If required, your chihuahua will recover quickly with complete recovery in as early as thirty days. Breeding chihuahuas with this disorder is not recommended. Chihuahuas affected still make for wonderful pets and those that do require surgery usually lead perfectly normal lives without any restrictions on activity.

Symptoms and signs of a sick chihuahua often can go unnoticed. Your chihuahua can not explain its symptoms, so it’s your responsibility to keep him or her healthy and to determine whether or not they need veterinary care. Chihuahuas tend to want to hide their illness, so it is up to you to check your chihuahua for abnormalities.

Not knowing if your chihuahua is feeling sick or how to care for your chihuahua when they are sick can be VERY stressful! This article will help you determine if your chihuahua is showing signs and symptoms of being ill and when you need to take them to see a veterinarian.

Be Prepared: Questions Your Veterinarian May Ask

Your veterinarian may ask additional questions to help localize or diagnose the problem. It may help to be prepared to answer some of the following questions:

  • How long have you owned your chihuahua?
  • Where did you get your chihuahua (adoption center, breeder, previous stray)?
  • What other type of pets do you have?
  • What is the age of your chihuahua?
  • Has your chihuahua experienced any previous illnesses?
  • Is your chihuahua currently under treatment for an illness or disease?

Preventing your chihuahua from overheating is important on hot summer days! Chihuahuas are small animals that love the sunshine and come from a hot environment, but they are still prone to overheating and temperature sensitivity.

Safety tips for keeping your chihuahua cool:

Never Leave Your Chihuahua In Your Vehicle

Many chihuahua owners take their chihuahuas everywhere. If you do this, make sure your chihauhua can go with you wherever you take it. In the summer heat, a chihuahua can develop health problems in a matter of minutes.

You should never leave your chihuahua unattended in the car when the outside temperature is below freezing or above 70 degrees. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the inside of a car parked in 70-degree weather can easily reach 100 degrees in just 20 minutes! Idle cars can reach an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit in less than an hour!

temperature: how hot is too hot to leave chihuahuas in car

If you can’t take your chihuahua inside where you go, then leave them at home.

Feed Your Chihuahua Lots Of Water

Always bring water with you and a way for your chihuahua to drink it. Try teaching your chihuahua how to drink from a bottle of water. You can also purchase a collapsible water bowl. Offer your chihuahua water regularly on those hot days. Ice cubes are a great way to keep them hydrated if they prefer to lick them.

You can also try feeding your chihuahua large crisp romaine lettuce leaves or other crisp and water filled vegetables that will quench their thirst.

Excessive Panting Should Not Be Ignored

Chihuahuas don’t sweat to cool themselves like humans do – they pant. Like all dogs, when chihuahuas are hot, they pant. If your chihuahua is panting excessively with labored breath, it could be in trouble. Pay attention to their behavior.

Offer them water immediately and get them into a cooler environment. If they foam at the mouth, this is a sure indication that it’s just too hot for your chihuahua.

Exercise Indoors!

It’s easy to exercise chihuahuas indoors, and this is definitely something to consider on those super hot days. When heat warnings are in effect, you and your chihuahua should spend most of your time indoors.

Try a light game of fetch inside with your chihuahua’s favorite toy or run them in the hallways of your home or apartment building.

Know The Signs Of Heatstroke

Like other chihuahua health issues, knowing the signs of heatstroke in a chihuahua is critical.

Indicators your chihuahua might be having a heatstroke:

  • Glazed eyes
  • Excessive panting
  • Fast or difficult breathing
  • Lethargy, or low energy
  • Excessive drooling, or foaming at the mouth
  • Vomiting (with or without blood)
  • Diarrhea (with or without blood)
  • Bright red, or very pale gums
  • Shaking
  • Collapsing or weakness
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness
  • Seizures

Heatstroke is a medical emergency, so don’t delay, get your chihuahua to the veterinarian immediately. Quick action on your part is necessary if your chihuahua’s life is at stake. It’s up to you to keep your chihuahua comfortable, healthy and safe in the summer heat!

Chihuahuas are tiny, cute dogs with big personalities. Named after the Mexican state “Chihuahua”, these little dogs are known for their lively nature and courageous mood. They easily gain the attention of their masters, but if you find it difficult to take care of your furry little friend, this brief Chihuahua care guide will be highly useful for beginner Chihuahua owners who are nurturing their Chihuahuas.

Chihuahua’s Temperament and Basic Nature

Chihuahuas make wonderful family pets because of their loyalty and loving nature. They enjoy being close to humans. And because of their small size, it is easy to travel with them. With that said, even thought they sometimes bark at strangers and other dogs, training makes this behavior manageable.

These adorable little canines have a charming temperament. Sometimes they act a bit bossy and like they are in control, but at other times, they just love attention and to be cuddled by their masters.

Most Chihuahuas want to get their masters’ attention, but they do not like to interact with strangers. Even thought they are tiny, they often act fearless.

How Should You Train Your Chihuahuas?

Most beginners face difficulties while training Chihuahuas. However, early socialization will make the training process much easier. With effort, consistency and patience, Chihuahuas can learn commands quickly.

Chihuahuas are intelligent and quick learners. You should avoid using any harsh techniques to train Chihuahuas. Make sure every training session is short to prevent boredom.

Chihuahuas love to respond to your positive reinforcement and many Chihuahua owners claim that their Chihuahuas are obedient and well-behaved companions. However, these little dogs can become stubborn, which makes training them even more challenging.

A good option is to get dog training services like that offered at Fieldstone Animal Inn. They are a good example of a professional dog trainers that knows how to train any dog breed with a proper method.

Dietary Tips for Chihuahuas

Like any other dog breed, Chihuahuas need a healthy and nutritious diet. Depending on their age and size, you can create a routine. You may buy premium quality dog food intended for smaller breeds. The right daily portion depends on:

  • The exercise routine
  • Metabolism
  • Weight

Chihuahua puppies and adult ones have particular dietary needs for faster growth and proper development. You may also consult a vet to choose the well-tested puppy food until it has reached 1 year old. It’s best to feed them 3 to 4 daily times daily. This ensures that your pet receives the right amount of calories and nutrients for rapid growth.

As your Chihuahua grows, you need to adjust portion sizes and check the weight. It will prevent obesity and overfeeding issues. If your Chihuahua has an upset tummy, contact the vet. Some experts recommend feeding dry kibbles to reduce the risk of periodontal disorder. As these kibbles are abrasive, they can remove plaque buildup.

Grooming Needs For Your Chihuahua

As Chihuahuas have a smooth coat and short hair, they need minimal grooming. However, the long-haired variety needs regular brushing and professional grooming. Brushing helps remove the loose hair from your dog’s coat.

Pay attention to the ears also to prevent infection. Clean the dog’s ears and trim their nails. Occasional bathing with a quality shampoo will keep your Chihuahua’s coat healthy.

Another important thing in the grooming routine is tooth brushing. Use the best toothpaste to keep the dental parts clean.

The Exercise Routine for Your Chihuahuas

Unlike other breeds, Chihuahuas have minimal exercise needs. The daily exercise session for these dogs can be up to 1 hour. You can use interactive toys and encourage your dogs to engage in play sessions.

As small Chihuahuas have delicate bones, you must not involve them in high-impact activities. So, be careful while creating an exercise routine for these dogs. Remember that puppies and adult Chihuahuas have different exercise needs. Create a controlled environment that lets your pups exercise safely. When they grow older, they gain resilience. Thus, their exercise levels will also be on the rise.

Potential Health Issues of Chihuahuas

Common Health Problems of Chihuahuas are:

Luxating Patellas – This chronic disorder causes arthritis and limping issues in your dogs. If you find your dog occasionally skipping, consult a vet. A gentle massaging will reduce the symptoms. But, surgery is essential to manage severe cases. You may buy joint supplements for your Chihuahuas.

Collapsing Trachea – This condition causes the main airway to collapse. Coughing and wheezing are common symptoms of this disorder. Collapsing trachea is a chronic disorder that may worsen as your dog gets older.

Heart disorder – Some Chihuahuas have congestive cardiac diseases that weaken their heart’s valves. This condition may enlarge their heart and cause other serious issues. Weakness and exercise intolerance are common signs of the disease.

Chihuahuas are healthy dogs, but without proper care, they may experience a few health issues. Regular check-ups with a vet and expert advice can prevent these health problems.

Training is also essential to make your Chihuahuas affectionate and playful companions. If you’re short on time, consider professional pet boarding services.

What Is A Collapsed Trachea?

Tracheal collapse in chihuahuas is a serious respiratory problem that can be chronic, progressive and unfortunately, is irreversible.

The trachea is the airway from the larnyx to the main bronchi in the lungs. It is a very sensitive area and looks somewhat similar to that of a vacuum hose and has many stiff rings with flexible tissue connecting them.

Sometimes these rings are not stiff enough and are unable to hold the trachea open against the air pressure that’s created during respiration. The portion of the trachea that is not stiff is then sucked into the airway causing partial obstruction making it difficult for your chihuahua to breath.

In addition, their abdominal muscles may become tense from the extra effort they make to breathe.

A collapsed trachea is a common chihuahua health concern that is characteristic of the chihuahua breed and is also commonly referred to as “reverse sneezing”.

Images Of A Normal Trachea Verses A Collapsed Trachea

Factors That Can Lead To Tracheal Collapse

  • Obesity,
  • Irritants,
  • Allergies,
  • Repeated heart conditions,
  • Bacterial infections,
  • Viruses
  • And second-hand cigarette smoke

Symptoms Presented With A Collapsed Trachea

  • Harsh and dry cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Exercise intolerance
  • A blue tinge on the gums
  • Fainting, wheezing and abnormal breathing
  • Rapid breathing

Tracheal collapse can also be brought on by damage done from leash pulling, especially if you use a collar to walk your chihuahua.

It is recommended that you switch to a trachea friendly chihuahua harness to prevent any pushing or pulling against the trachea.

Diagnosis of Tracheal Collapse

If any of the symptoms above develop, take your chihuahua to the vet right away. If they are not treated, damage can occur in the lungs, larynx, nasal passages and soft palate regions.

As mentioned, there is no cure for a collapsed trachea, but there are different ways in which you can help keep your chihuahua comfortable.

Your veterinarian will also provide you with the right medications and you will be able to further prevent symptoms.

does your chihuahua have fleas?

The warm weather is here. It’s the ideal season to take your chihuahua to the park to play or go for long walks. Unfortunately, it’s also the season for fleas and ticks. Fleas emerge from their larvae as adults and migrate to the nearest mammal for blood meals.

tick or a flea?

Signs and symptoms of fleas and ticks:

  • excessive or constant scratching and itching
  • biting or chewing, especially at the rear, tail and inside or outside of thighs
  • inflammation
  • hair loss
  • skin lesions
  • red, raised bumps that look like pimples
  • flea dirt, black gritty material in coat

An adult flea has 6 legs and is about the size of a pinhead and can jump about 100 times its own height. Their ability to jump makes it possible for them to travel quickly from host to host and to hiding places for laying eggs.

Ticks on the other hand, has eight legs instead of six and is known for spreading diseases like rocky mountain spotted fever, encephalitis, tularemia, tick paralysis, and Lyme disease. Several species of ticks feed on dogs, including the wood tick, the brown dog tick, the deer tick which can be found in tall grass, shrubby areas, and in the woods.

There also exists the sheep tick. Ticks have a large abdomen that stretches as they feed on blood and they tend to hang onto your chihuahua’s hair and latches on to their skin to suck blood.

Getting rid of fleas and ticks: Treatment and prevention

Groom your chihuahua often – If they have fleas, wash him with a flea shampoo or add neem oil to your regular shampoo. Use a flea comb to trap the fleas and then apply aloe vera or tea tree oil mixed with water to soothe inflamed areas. If they don’t have them, bath them daily with a natural flea repellent like neem oil or eucalyptus to ward them off.

Use flea repellent – Natural products like flea away powder and essential oils (cedar, tea tree, lavender, citronella) are effective. For added protection, consider using the Fur Life collar against fleas, which provides long-lasting defense and complements natural remedies by creating a consistent barrier against pests.

Eliminate fleas from your home – keep your house clean. vacuum daily and pay close attention to dark, moist places and your chihuahua’s bed. Put flea powder in your vacuum bag prior to vacuuming and then dispose of the bag immediately after. You can also try a natural compound cleaning powder like borax or diatomaceous earth.

Eliminate fleas form your yard – keep your grass short and avoid leaf piles or other “dark, moist places” for critters to infest in.  Natural flea repellents like cedar chips and flea away sprayed through a hose along the fence line or in spots your dog really likes will also help combat fleas.

Feed your chihuahua a healthy diet – poor, defenseless or malnourished pets have weak immune systems which make them more vulnerable to flea and tick infestation.

It’s best to take your chihuahua puppy to the vet if they are infected with fleas as they are especially vulnerable because of their size and may need special care.

The Chihuahua diet is a topic that all Chihuahua owners should research and take seriously. When it comes to a Chihuahua, remember that you are feeding more than just a pet – this is a compact ball of a Chihuahua with a big heart. Because of their dimensions, Chihuahuas are energetically needy and possess some food sensitivities.

This guide outlines what is required to ensure that your Chihuahua’s diet is correct so they remain healthy, energetic, and happy. We have covered the most pertinent recommendations on what foods your little cutie should eat and what not to make informed and healthy choices for your pup.

Nutritional Diet for Chihuahua Health

Chihuahuas don’t require numerous nutrients, but a balance of nutrition. Choosing a healthy dry dog food or the right raw food will require prioritizing the main components for what you need:

Protein for Muscle and Energy

Your pet Chihuahua is likely to be small and active. Thus, good-quality protein should be included in the diet. Some protein sources include:

  • Lean meats: Dominating protein sources, such as chicken and turkey fish, are also excellent protein sources.
  • Eggs: Cooked eggs are a good protein source, but they should be offered in moderation to avoid any complications.
  • Lamb and beef: These can be incorporated as long as your Chihuahua tolerates them without complications.

Dietary Fats that Promote Healthy Skin and Coat

The right essential fats will improve energy levels and ensure that the coat remains shiny and the skin healthy. Some of these include:

  • Fish oil: Fish oil is a decent source of omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coats.
  • Chicken fat: A popular fat source that is relied on by most dog food manufacturers.
  • Olive oil or coconut oil: In moderation, these oils may offer nutritious fats without overwhelming a dog’s diet.

Cutting back on fatty foods is necessary since fat is also a source of energy, so this means weight gain may be caused by moderation.

Carbohydrates For Sustained Energy

Too many carbs are not needed in the Chihuahua diet, yet a small quantity can offer sweet energy. Take note of wholesome sources that are easy to digest, including:

  • Sweet potatoes: These are carb-packed with nutrients and are easy to digest.
  • Brown rice: Soft on the stomach and offers fiber.
  • Quinoa: A gluten-free grain that offers protein for diversity.

Carbs may keep one active but should not be abused since some Chihuahuas cannot handle large amounts of grains.

Incorporating CBD Oil into Your Chihuahua’s Diet

CBD oil for dogs is increasingly becoming a trend for pet parents owing to its several health advantages. Chihuahua dogs, too, can benefit from using Cannabidiol oil. Here is what you need to know about incorporating CBD oil into your Chihuahua food.

Possible Benefits of CBD Oil for Chihuahuas

Eases Tension: It can assist in calmness and relaxation for Chihuahuas. If your dog is hyperactive due to car movement, fireworks, separation, etc., CBD may help relieve some of these stresses without making the dog sluggish.

Balances Digestion: Perhaps CBD oil may be useful to encourage healthy digestion. For those Chihuahuas with sensitive stomachs, it supports the internal gut and helps out now and again with digestive upsets.

Enhanced Coat Health: Made from Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, Cannabidiol oil will also care for your Chihuahua’s coat and ensure that it appears glimmering and fluffy.

Stepwise Process of Safe Consumption of CBD Oil for Chihuahuas

What is the correct dose of CBD oil for dogs? Cannabidiol oil should be given to Chihuahuas in moderation. Follow these guidelines when trying it out for the first time.

  • Look for Quality: It is best to try pet-targeted CBD products that are reputable for their purity and strength. THC should be restricted if consumed as it has direct adverse effects on dogs.
  • Always Start Small: Start with a small board for CBD oil for as much as half your Chihuahua’s weight. If necessary, gently increase it.
  • Look at your dog to see how it responds: After starting CBD, observe how your Chihuahua behaves. Pay particular attention to changes in behavior, energy levels, or appetite.

All CBD products have a risk aspect; always talk to your veterinarian about CBD if you want to make it a regular supplement for your Chihuahua.

Food That Should Never Be Included In Chihuahua Meals

Many people already know that certain foods are considered harmful or poisonous for Chihuahuas. You will need to remember what to keep out of their bowls:

Food that is Dangerous for Chihuahuas

  • Chocolate: Theobromine is contained in it, and this substance can be poisonous to dogs.
  • Grapes and raisins: Too many of them can lead to kidney issues.
  • Onions and garlic: Red blood cells are destroyed, leading to possible anemia
  • Avocado: Contains a person, which may trigger stomach problems.

Never give these foods to Chihuahuas; even the smallest quantity can create health-related complications.

Foods That Are Not Advised For Chihuahuas

Some foods are hard for Chihuahuas to handle in the stomach, and therefore, they will not feel very comfortable afterward.

  • Dairy: This might result in gas or an upset stomach, as many dogs have lactose intolerance.
  • High-fat foods: Animals can develop digestive problems and have a higher chance of developing pancreatitis.
  • Processed foods: Food colorings may create an upset stomach, among other problems.

Conclusion: How To Prepare the Best Diet for Your Chihuahua

There is a lot of conflicting information on the best diet for your Chihuahua, but it’s easy if you pay attention to particulars. If you concentrate on good protein sources, a sensible diet, and provide food on a routine basis, you can promote your Chihuahua’s health, energy, and mood in the best way possible.

Don’t forget: each Chihuahua is different, so watch what foods your Chihuahua likes or dislikes, and call your veterinarian for help regarding your Chihuahua diet choices if you can. Your Chihuahua will be healthy, energetic, and full of life every single day with a diet that is suitable for them if you stay on top of it as recommended in this article.

health indications in Chihuahuas you should pay attention to

Unsurprisingly, being one the smallest purebred dogs, figuring out Chihuahuas isn’t an easy job. They have personalities; but sometimes, their unorthodox traits (that are positive in nature) get mingled with their unusual traits, and that’s when alarm bells start ringing. So, in the wake of that realization, we’re here to make the process of ‘figuring out’ a Chihuahua a little easier for you.

Here’s a list of 6 health issues in Chihuahuas you should pay attention to:

Movement

Celebrities around the world carry Chihuahuas as a part of their fashion statement. This chiefly is owing to their small size and adorable appearance. But, it is important to remember they are but dogs and dogs need to roam about freely no matter how fragile they are. Stagnation can be very problematic for Chihuahuas which can cause various health problems.

They need to play a game of tug or with toys or such other things as they are very agile. Moreover, their energies need to be channelized. Being sedentary makes them feel very gloomy, grumpy and old! Pet owners need to take care they have enough movement and look for the fact that the dog is happy.

Luxating Patella

The Chihuahua owners should keep in mind that these fragile, little dogs have very fragile legs. They need to be very carefully handled as a simple jump from a sofa or the owner’s arms, owing to its mischievous nature, might cause their bones to break or cause a luxating patella.

A luxating patella in a chihuahua occurs when the patella of the dog, which is normally positioned on the thigh bone groove, slips out of the synchronized arrangement. In such cases, you have to take serious note, as such chihuahua health ailments might affect your dog severely. It can occur in one or both hind limbs. In a breed like Chihuahuas, this de-synchronization occurs in a medial way or in a direction going to the interior of the affected limb.

Before you start delving deeper into diseases, it’s important to take note of a few points regarding how pet insurance works. In fact, pet insurance functions more in a way like property insurance than health insurance. So, the policyholder has to directly pay for the healthcare of the pet and only then get reimbursed by the insurance-providing firm.

It is very important to note these insurances never cover already existing diseases or abnormalities. It is financially beneficial when some serious accident or sudden illness occurs that have the ability to bring home very high bills from the vet.

Abnormalities in defecation

This is the hardest part! Agile as they are, defecation training to Chihuahuas becomes very difficult. They do not have a will to defecate almost always but the pet owners must keep in mind they are tiny beings with tiny digestive systems. It is natural they cannot hold on for long intervals.

So, if the owner cannot always cater to its needs, it should at least be trained on how to visit a litter box. This is a feasible measure making both contended. Asking it to hold for long forcefully might cause more serious troubles, adding on to more vet expenditure.

Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is a very dangerous health hazard. It means “water in the brain” and can get very wrong if people mistake it to be a cuteness quotient for Chihuahuas. The problem is because they’ve a very unique face and head, often even referred to as “apple head”. What apparently seems adorable might be a serious issue for the dog.

It occurs when there is excess cerebrospinal fluid exerting pressure on the brain as well as the allied cerebral structures. The baby face and unproportionately large head are primarily caused by the abnormal drainage and circulation of CSF. This heightens up the pressure inside the cranium very much and can damage the extremely sensitive brain of the dog.

Periodontal Disease

This is a disease associated with infected, trembling teeth as well as odorous breath. The teeth eventually become loose enough to break off. It is painful for the dog as to how the teeth inflict when they gradually loosen. They even wear and tear the jaw bone. In fact, this is something so less looked after that vets find most Chihuahuas having bad teeth or a complete absence of teeth in adults.

So, right from taking in a puppy, a vet should be absolutely consulted to keep proper care of the baby’s teeth not only to enhance its smile but also to ease its pain. In adult Chihuahuas, the preventive dentistry which the vet recommends must be followed. This includes dental cleansing by the use of anesthesia in proper intervals as well as how to brush teeth or rinse teeth at home as a part of a very inclusive all-home program.

Cold and Chill

Chihuahuas have an affinity for wearing sweaters and jackets during winter and become naturally morose when it rains. It is primarily because they are extremely sensitive to weather fluctuations and their little bodies can easily catch a cold. So, even if celebrities often propagate their sense of fashion, what they’re looking for is protection.

Final words

Like we suggested earlier, Chihuahuas are adorable, unusual but there’s some uncertainty to that unusual. We hope this article takes away most of those uncertainties out of the window and makes the lives of Chihuahua owners a little easier.

Continue reading to learn more about one of the best filtering systems, which I am confident will keep your Chihuahua’s water clean and safe. But first, let’s take a look at why filtered water is beneficial to your Chihuahua.

Why is a Water Filter Good for Your Chihuahua?

It’s important to remember that polluted water contains contaminants like microbes, lead, and other chemicals. They can, unfortunately, cause serious health problems not only for you, but also for your Chihuahua. As a result, you should provide them with high-quality water on a daily basis. It will improve their overall health as well as their immunity. The following are 3 ways that filtered water benefits a Chihuahua:

Reduces Chlorine Levels

There are numerous advantages to using filtered water, one of which is that it minimizes the level of chlorine. Tap water contaminated with chlorine can do serious damage to your Chihuahua’s cells. Furthermore, it can cause breathing difficulties, excessive coughing, and other serious symptoms.

What’s worse, Chihuahuas are even more sensitive to the negative effects of chlorine. This is due to the fact that their digestive systems are not designed or strong enough to withstand it. As a result, it is only logical that you purchase a water filtration system, such as a Berkey water filtration system, that will remove this contaminant from the water they drink.

Improves Tear Staining

Filtered water has a number of benefits for Chihuahuas, one of which is that it reduces tear staining. Tear stains are minute dark imprints that appear below the eyes of a Chihuahua and are most visible in light-colored dogs.

They are caused by a poor diet as well as toxins in tap water. The size of the tear stain indicates the amount of toxins consumed via their diet and unfiltered water. Thankfully, the use of a water filtration system can significantly improve this. Providing filtered water to your Chihuahua will not only reduce their tear stains, but also it will indicate that their bodies are healthy and free of water contaminants.

Keeps Them Hydrated

Chihuahua’s, similar to humans, are primarily made up of water. As a result, we all require water to stay hydrated and cool off. When they drink water that is tasty, they are more likely to drink lots of it. An increase in water intake means they are less likely to become dehydrated, especially on a hot summer day. Filtered water will also aid in the prevention of urinary tract infections in your Chihuahua. Even if they get sick, drinking clean water will help them recover much faster.

What Water Filter Should I Get for My Chihuahua?

A Berkey water filter system is one of the best filters around. With this water filter system, contaminants are filtered out rather than using chemicals to clean your water. If you want your Chihuahua to drink chemical-free water, Berkey’s filtering system is the best option. Berkey Systems eliminates a wide range of microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria. At the same time, it ensures that beneficial minerals like potassium and magnesium remain in your water. Best of all, the Berkey filter system has a lower cost per gallon than most filters.

Will My Chihuahua Notice a Taste Change?

Berkey’s water filtration system will enhance the taste of your water, which means your Chihuahua will want to consume more of it. This will keep them hydrated and active. They, like you, should drink clean, filtered water. Trust me, they will show their appreciation by wagging their tails or lavishing you with kisses. Besides, you want a pet that is both happy and healthy.

Conclusion

The advantages of filtered water supersede any extra expenses. Investing in a filter will help you care for and even improve the health of your Chihuahua. This will reduce their chances of dying prematurely. So, for the sake of your Chihuahua, invest in a Berkey water filtration system today.
