just who is papi the famous chihuahua and how did this fabulous canine warrior come to steal the spotlight?

the star of disney’s beverly hills chihuahua didn’t always live the glamorous life. this part chihuahua, part mutt, whose off-screen name is rusco, was actually rescued from ‘doggy death row’ in a los angeles animal shelter only months before landing the role of papi in the disney film.

after countless unsuccessful auditions with canine breeders and veteran movie pet stars, hollywood animal trainer mike alexander discovered rusco’s picture on the internet while searching animal directories online.

rusco was scheduled to be put down after he was found wandering the streets of moreno valley and no one came to claim him, but alexander saw him and decided he was perfect for the role of papi in the film.

alexander then raced to save little rusco from a lethal injection. he rushed down to the shelter, but it was so far away and he had traffic to deal with. when he got there, they were just closing the doors.

alexander returned the next day and was thrilled to discover rusco was still alive. after spending a little time with him, he knew that rusco was the perfect papi. it was rusco’s big ears, great expression and bouncy personality that made him stand out.

with no previous experience, rusco was given six months of training for his role as papi, the street-wise chihuahua of a gardener who falls head over heels for a pampered, diamond-clad beverly hills chihuahua named chloe.

the film has a cast of more than 200 dogs, including dobermans, poodles, german shepherds, pugs, a labrador and a dachshund, but papi is the real star.

“he’s a little bigger than most chihuahuas. when he runs, he hops. i don’t think i’ve seen a chihuahua hop like a bunny before. he’s a romantic dog, but he’s got a little bit of street in him,” says actor george lopez, who is the voice of Papi and who also has three chihuahuas of his own.

if it’s true that history repeats itself, the friday premiere of disney’s beverly hills chihuahua is sure to prompt a spike in demand for the smallest dog breed in the world.

“the same kind of thing happened right after the ‘101 dalmatians’ remake came out, and a lot of people realized they made a mistake,” said capt. bob brown of brevard animal services, which has animal shelters in titusville and melbourne.

chihuahua parents, like marcia ferris of palm bay, are excited about seeing the film, but worried that folks won’t do their research before adopting a chi-chi just like papi, voiced by george lopez, or chloe, voiced by drew barrymore.

ferris has owned chihuahuas for 48 years, and currently has three: goldi, patches and tina.

“i wouldn’t miss it,” she said about beverly hills chihuahua. “i appreciate that this type of movie is going to come out, but when something like that comes out, everybody buys one.”

in many cases, if the pet-person relationship doesn’t work out, brown said, and dogs end up in a shelter.

“we like happy endings,” he said. “if you rush into things sometimes, that may not happen.”

chihuahuas are not the best breed for small children

people need to know that chihuahuas, even though they’re featured in a disney movie, are not the best pets for families with small children. this is because they have very sensitive heads, especially chihuahua puppies. children don’t realize how fragile chihuahuas are, and might pat them too hard or grab them. the dogs suffer permanent injuries or snap back.

chihuahuas are energetic, but independent

“just like any pet, people should take into consideration what they want the pet for,” said theresa clifton, executive director of the central brevard humane society in cocoa. “if they’re looking for a dog to play with kids and fetch a ball, a chihuahua is not the dog for them.”

conversely, chihuahuas make great companions for older folks, ferris said.

chihuahuas have big egos and tend to think they’re larger than they really are. ferris’s, for instance, are as protective of her home as her doberman pinscher, fabio, she said. If not well socialized and trained in obedience, though, chihuahuas can get nasty.

“when the elderly people carry them around as babies, they become extremely territorial and dangerous,” said ferris, an obedience trainer for the indian river dog training club.

the same goes for chihuahuas toted around in wealthy women’s louis vuitton bags, as seen in beverly hills chihuahua. in real life, they’re not likely to be friendly if pampered too much.

“just keep them social,” ferris said. “let people touch them, pet them and don’t carry them around 24/7. that’s what makes them aggressive.”

health-wise, chihuahuas don’t have many problems, said mary kirby of vero beach. kirby and her husband, floyd, are veterinarians and own two chihuahuas.

“the biggest thing with them is that they often have bad knees,” kirby said.

the condition, which can be corrected with surgery, is called luxating patella, which means their kneecaps in the hind legs slide out at the joint.

it is important to also know that chihuahuas, being a small breed, live longer than larger breeds so be prepared for at least a 15-year commitment.

for those people whose lifestyles are compatible with the breed, it’s a commitment worth keeping.

“i think the thing I love most about them is the feistiness, that spirit,” kirby said.

there are a few rules of thumb when it comes to selecting a chihuahua.

a dog is for life, so make sure you get it from a good breeder and go to an obedience class.

search online for reputable chihuahua breeders and chihuahua rescue groups, ask friends for recommendations, and again, research the chihuahua breed characteristics.

also, don’t rule out a shelter chihuahua. about 25 percent to 30 percent of animals at the shelter are purebred, and those that aren’t sometimes make the best companions.

“i’m looking forward to the movie, but I’m not looking forward to the result,” says bunten, head of breed rescue for the chihuahua club of america.

sadly, she speaks from experience. whenever a chihuahua has been featured in entertainment in the past, it’s been followed by a spike in the number given up by people who didn’t realize what they were getting into.

it’s easy to fall in love with movie stars, especially when the stars are perfectly trained by professional handlers like the glitzy darlings in disney’s oct. 3 release.

remember, the dogs are playing roles. the real-life personalities of various breeds might not be what you expect. in the case of chihuahuas, don’t think laid-back lap dog just because they’re small. read the chihuahua breed standard carefully, particularly on temperament.

chihuahuas are feisty, independent and driven, but because they’re little, people treat them differently. that can mean trouble.

to start, says bruce shirky, president of the chihuahua club, people tend to be “grabby” with small dogs. most of us have the sense not to reach out for a strange rottweiler, but it’s hard to resist the desire to hold something cute and tiny.

combine that with the fact that chihuahuas tend to become attached to one individual, meaning they’re not terribly friendly to strangers, and don’t be surprised if your little cutie defends itself vigorously.

their size combined with their assertiveness can get them into trouble with other dogs, too.

“they will challenge every other dog regardless of size. that can be suicidal,” says katie greer, who spent 15 years training chihuahuas in the sport of agility.

early socialization and training are critical to keep potential aggression in check. unfortunately, owners have a tendency to neglect training with small dogs, a big mistake in a breed with the chihuahua’s temperament.

in addition, shirky advises, don’t carry your dog in a purse, which just increases the risk that someone will reach for it and get bitten.

“chihuahuas are famous for being tyrants because people don’t treat them like dogs,” says greer, who lives in balch springs, texas.

their drive and intelligence make them great for agility training, which involves a complex race course over different obstacles, but a problem for many owners. in training, “you have to be smarter than the chihuahua, and you have to convince the chihuahua that it was the chihuahua’s idea. this is not a tiny golden retriever.”

neglect of training may even extend to housebreaking, because a small mess may seem easier to tolerate at first, then fray an owner’s nerves over time. many chihuahuas are given up to rescue for this reason, bunten says.

if “small” makes you think “good for apartments,” be aware that chihuahuas are excellent watchdogs but your neighbors may not appreciate the barking and your carpets might not appreciate the terrier-like love of digging.

chihuahuas aren’t generally recommended for families with small children. along with their size, a soft spot on the top of the head that they’re born with, like human babies, never closes in some adult dogs.

if you’re up to the challenge of a chihuahua, rescue is a great place to start. you’ll be dealing with people who know the breed, and the personality of an adult dog is already clear.

if you want a puppy, shirky advises, buy local so you can make sure it’s being socialized properly from the beginning. the litter should be raised in a high traffic area of the house and have lots of visitors.

and be wary of the description ‘teacup chihuahua.’ there’s no accepted definition of the term. if you get a particularly small pup, they have more health problems and tend to live very shortened lives.

smart, funny and loyal, their fans agree, chihuahuas can be a handful – but that’s what they love about them.

“the world is theirs – they own it, and they allow other people to come into it,” greer says. “they make me laugh when I see them out thinking me.”
